Tour 1: Locust Trace, Equus Run Vineyard,
      & Locust Trace Ag School

Locust Trace AgriScience Center is the newest career and technical high school in Lexington, Kentucky with energy and environment being key factors in the facility design and agriculture being the educational focus.  Locust trace features spacious classrooms with adjoining labs, 6.5 acres for gardening, a state-of-the-art greenhouse with an aquaculture area for raising fish, a soaring auditorium with a garage door for bringing in livestock and machinery, an expansive equine barn and arena and an on-site veterinary clinic. Students study in one of five programs; Plant and Land Science, Veterinary Assistant, Agriculture Power Mechanics, Equine Studies and Large Animal Science.

The school is designed to be net-zero in energy through the use of photovoltaic solar panels and net-zero in waste disposal through the utilization of constructed wetlands. The school is also minimally hooked up to water municipalities. All rain water is collected from the classroom building and the equine/barn arena to be utilized for all crop irrigation and livestock watering. An on-site well has been accessed to back up the rain water collection system in case of a drought. Sustainable agriculture is a focus in all programs.

Tour 3: Shaker Village
       Restored Working Shaker Community

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is a landmark destination that shares 3,000 acres of discovery in the spirit of the Kentucky Shakers. Home to the third largest Shaker community in the United States between 1805 and 1910, the vibrant site offers experiences designed to ignite curiosity, expand imaginations and inspire generations.

For centuries, the site has inspired, comforted and been sanctuary to many people, plants and animals. Each of Shaker Village’s 34 historic structures was built with materials that were readily available from Shaker lands—quarried limestone, kiln-fired clay bricks and hand-planed old growth timbers. The buildings are surrounded by 3,000 acres of conserved farmland, native prairies, forests and wetlands, establishing a mixed-use nature preserve and protecting the original view shed that contextualizes the historic buildings.
The Shakers wasted nothing, and today we seek to follow in their footsteps by establishing sound, environmentally friendly organizational practices. Shaker Village is committed to sustainable agricultural practices, sound ecological land management and public environmental education.

Ongoing sustainability initiatives include:
•        Agricultural and environmental education programs
•        Solid waste management planning throughout all Shaker Village departments
•        Low-waste event management through recycling, composting and reforestation programs
•        Energy consumption and water usage audits
•        Transition to geothermal heating and cooling
•        Best practices staff training
•        Native prairie conversion project
•        Native tree planting program and arboretum
•        Organic farming practices
•        Farm composting project

The tour will include the main area of Shaker Village, a farm tour, and worship service.

Tour 4: Boyd's Orchard, Alltech Kentucky Ale,
       and Towne Branch Distillery

At Boyd Orchards, we take an ‘Unconventional – Conventional Approach’ to how we grow our fruit. The methods we use allow us to have high yields of fruit, prevent insects, fungi and bacteria on our trees thus producing a healthy and great tasting fruit.

All of the products used in our prevention programs are extremely biodegradable. As a general statement, in a 2 week period, our products will breakdown to an allowable or less than allowable reside level. However it should be noted that by adding one (1) additional week to that 2, residue levels will drop to less than 50% below the allowable limit. Boyd Orchards exceeds the USDA’s spray guidelines for the window of harvest by waiting an additional 4 weeks giving us a total of 6 weeks after application meaning that our reside levels are minuscule and probably immeasurable. Our customized spray programs give you what we believe to be the safest fruit possible to consume.
