Barbara Mardigian

Clinical Director

Barbara is a graduate of Ferrum College and MCV / VCU School of rehabilitation counseling specializing in drug and alcohol education. She has worked in the field of addiction since 1997. She received her LPC in 2004, and has worked in a variety of settings including intensive outpatient, private practice, secure unit hospitals, all working with adolescents or adults with dual diagnosis including, PTSD, depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder and addiction. She has worked at the Farley center in their professional program working with many professionals in treatment including physicians, lawyers, military personnel including high-ranking officers and their family members. She also worked in Virginia Monitoring, Inc, which was the first monitoring agency for addicted health professionals in the state of Virginia. Barbara has been with VJLAP since 2019 as the deputy clinical director.

Jessica Riggs, MD
Virginia Heart
Sleep Medicine; Women's Sleep Disorders

Jessica Riggs, MD, specializes in sleep medicine, and is also board-certified in pulmonary and critical care, and internal medicine.
Dr. Riggs manages all sleep disorders including insomnia, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and vasomotor symptoms through Virginia Heart Cardiovascular practice and INOVA. She has a special interest in women’s hormonal health, and sleep health as it pertains to mental wellness, burnout prevention, and professional performance. She is a member of the North American Menopause Society and has given several lectures on Women’s Sleep Health.
Dr. Riggs earned her medical degree from Albany Medical College and pursued her residency in Internal Medicine at Rutgers University Hospital in New Jersey. She completed fellowships in pulmonology, critical care, and sleep medicine at New York University.
Prior to returning to the Northern Virginia area, Dr. Riggs worked front-line in Brooklyn and Manhattan ICUs as a critical care attending physician during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Riggs is an avid soccer enthusiast, mid distance runner, and toddler mom.

Larry Roberts

Director, Sorenson Institute

Larry Roberts has served as the Director of the Sorensen Institute for Civic Leadership since February 2020. He is a 2001 alumnus of Sorensen's Political Leaders Program.
Roberts has served as Counselor to a Virginia Governor, Chief of Staff to a Virginia Lt. Governor. In each position, he earned praise for working across the partisan aisle.
He also served as Chief of Staff to the Chair of a national political committee and chaired six successful statewide campaigns in Virginia.
In addition to working in government and politics, Roberts was a successful lawyer in private practice for more than 20 years, including partnerships with the Skadden Arps and Davis Wright Tremaine international law firms and, most recently, as a partner at Venable LLP.
He was President of the Federal Communications Bar Association and was the founding chair of a charitable foundation that has distributed millions of dollars in college scholarships and contributions to organizations serving those in need. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the Georgetown University Law Center. Virginia Law Weekly named him as one of its 2017 Virginia Leaders in the Law, and he won three Federal Communications Bar Association Distinguished Service Awards. In addition, he received Venable's 2017 Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year award.
